Who are we?
Happy Valley is a family business that was founded in 1975 by Ben and Dot Rawnsey. For over 40 years they have been dedicated to providing consumers with the purest New Zealand Manuka honey, using the best beekeeping practices. Today, the 3rd generation of beekeepers in the family use their knowledge and experience to care for over 50,000 hives, located in the most remote areas of New Zealand.
Our company strongly believes in family values, lasting relationships, innovation, and honesty.
“The family is the heart of our hive”
What distinguishes Manuka honey from other types of honey?
Manuka honey comes from the nectar of the flowers of the manuka shrub (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand.
Manuka honey has become known in the medical world due to its antibacterial properties, which are unique to all other types of honey, as a result of research conducted by Prof. Dr. Peter Molan at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.
He discovered in 1981 that the hydrogen peroxide activity in Manuka honey, which gives it its unique antibacterial properties, is much higher than in any other type of honey. The active substances responsible for the non-peroxide antibacterial activity are methylglyoxal (MG) and dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which are predominantly found in Manuka honey.
Nearly 40 years of research have revealed the remarkable therapeutic properties of manuka honey: antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiseptic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Manuka honey intensely supports the immune system and body health, being an extremely effective natural remedy.
But not all manuka honey is active, only manuka honey that contains high levels of specific markers (MG and DHA). The UMF® quality standard measures and guarantees the level of active substances naturally present in manuka honey, which give it its exceptional antibacterial properties.
UMF® = QUALITY GUARANTEE
UMF® (Unique Manuka Factor) is the only rating system that determines the antibacterial power of manuka honey by measuring all 3 key markers present in manuka honey (not just one, analyzed in isolation):
1. methylglyoxal (MG) level = indicates hydrogen peroxide activity ⃰
2.dihydroxyacetone (DHA) level = indicates hydrogen peroxide activity ⃰
3.leptosperin = substance that indicates that Manuka honey is 100% AUTHENTIC, as it is found exclusively in the nectar of Manuka flowers.
⃰The level of hydrogen peroxide activity is an indicator of the antibacterial properties of manuka honey. The higher it is, the stronger the antibacterial effect of manuka honey.
UMF® is a registered, internationally recognized and verifiable trademark, used only by licensed New Zealand producers. It is the only quality standard behind the research conducted on manuka honey and a grading system that guarantees that manuka honey is 100% pure and active (has high levels of DHA and MG), which means it has special antibacterial properties compared to regular honey.
In conclusion, the presence of the UMF® symbol on the packaging is an absolute guarantee of quality.
The UMF® brand is followed by a number that indicates the strength of the UMF® activity of a batch of manuka honey. The higher the number, the stronger the product.
Happy Valley UMF® honey is tested by independent laboratories to show that it meets not only the New Zealand Government's monofloral manuka honey standard, but also the purity and quality standards set by the UMF® Association. The UMF® Association regularly audits and tests UMF® manuka honey to assure consumers of its quality.
