What is MOVICOL® and how does it work?

MOVICOL® is a well-tolerated and fast-acting laxative for the treatment of acute and chronic constipation in adults and children aged 12 years and older. The medical device is available as a powder in sachets for preparing a drinkable solution with a pleasantly fresh lemon, lime, orange, or chocolate flavor, or as ready-to-drink pouches.

For rapid effectiveness, MOVICOL® relies on the active ingredient macrogol 3350. This has an osmotic effect – it binds water. In this way, MOVICOL® helps to soften the intestinal contents and increase stool volume. When stool volume increases, the pressure within the intestine rises. This can reactivate intestinal motility (peristalsis) and facilitate bowel movements .
MOVICOL® exerts its effect without causing habituation and is well tolerated thanks to its low number of side effects and interactions.1 Instead of dehydrating the body, drinking the solution adds water to the intestinal contents, increasing stool volume. This allows the medication to improve bowel function and facilitate bowel movements, even in cases of long-standing constipation.

The efficacy of MOVICOL® against acute and chronic constipation in children and adults has been demonstrated in studies.3, 5, 6 Today, this medical device is among the best-selling laxatives for constipation in Germany and Europe.2 The active ingredient, macrogol, is recommended by numerous physicians and professional societies for the treatment of chronic constipation.
