Indications:

• Vagisan Lactic Acid is used to maintain and restore the natural vaginal pH levels. The use of lactic acid to acidify the vaginal environment supports the growth of bacteria that are normally found in the vagina (lactobacilli that produce lactic acid = lactic bacteria), while having a negative effect on the growth of disease-causing germs
• Vagisan Acid Lactic can therefore be used to prevent vaginal infections in women prone to such conditions and as a support for the drug treatment of vaginal infections
• Vagisan Acid Lactic is available as vaginal ovules containing a mixture of lactic acid and sodium lactate. The vaginal ovules can be used to maintain or regulate the natural vaginal pH level − in adult women − during breastfeeding − in pregnant women and girls, after consulting a doctor. Long-term preventive treatment can be safely administered to women prone to vaginal infections.

What you need to know about lactic acid and vaginal infections:

• The cells inside the vaginal wall contain sugar, which is released during the normal shedding of cells. This sugar is broken down into lactic acid by lactic acid bacteria in the vagina. If enough lactic acid is present, the vaginal environment is naturally acidic, with a pH of 3.8-4.4. These are unfavorable conditions for the growth of unwanted bacteria. An acidic vaginal environment therefore helps prevent bacterial infections. The acidic vaginal environment can be disrupted by various external factors, causing the pH to rise above 4.5
• Possible factors include body secretions such as menstrual blood or semen, a reduced number of lactobacilli due to antibiotics, and fluctuations in hormone levels during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or as a result of the use of female sex hormones. Under such conditions, unwanted germs can grow in the vagina. These germs can originate from the area around the entrance to the vagina (e.g., the anal region) and can ascend into the vagina or can be transmitted through sexual contact. These germs can then grow excessively and suppress the natural lactobacilli flora, which can cause a vaginal infection.
• In women prone to repeated vaginal infections, the vaginal use of lactic acid can in many cases help to support the self-regulation of the acidic pH level.
