Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a neurotransmitter with an inhibitory (relaxing) effect, synthesized in the brain from glutamic acid in the presence of vitamin B6.
The high concentration of GABA present in the hypothalamus indicates the role of this amino acid in the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle and the functioning of the endocrine system.
