Description Magnesium citrate
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Magnesium citrate is an organic form of magnesium, obtained by combining this essential mineral with citric acid, known for its superior solubility and bioavailability compared to other inorganic magnesium salts.
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, playing a central role in muscle contraction and relaxation, the transmission of nerve impulses, energy metabolism, the maintenance of electrolyte balance and the support of cardiovascular health.
Forms of administration
The most common forms are tablets and capsules, which are easy to administer and dose accurately, but magnesium citrate is also available as a powder or liquid, preferred in certain clinical contexts.
A representative example is Solgar Magnesium Citrate, 200 mg, formulated without sugar, salt, starch, yeast, wheat, soya, gluten or lactose, and free from preservatives, artificial flavours or colours.
Formulations with higher concentrations are also available on the market, such as Zenyth magnesium citrate 1200 mg, intended for situations where a higher intake or a controlled laxative effect is required.
Directions for use
Magnesium citrate is recommended for the prevention and correction of magnesium deficiency, which manifests as muscle cramps, persistent fatigue, irritability, sleep disturbances or palpitations.
It is useful for supporting the normal functioning of the nervous system during periods of intense mental or physical stress, as well as for reducing mild anxiety and states of tension.
Thanks to its osmotic effect, magnesium citrate is also recommended for occasional constipation, as it has a mild laxative effect.
Dosage regimen
For adults, the usual dose of 200 mg magnesium citrate is one tablet per day, preferably taken with meals to reduce the risk of gastric discomfort.
For capsules, 1–3 capsules a day are recommended, taken with meals and plenty of liquid. To reduce the laxative effect, the dose should be divided into separate doses.
Contraindications
The administration of magnesium citrate is contraindicated in people with severe renal impairment, as magnesium excretion is compromised, increasing the risk of hypermagnesaemia.
Furthermore, it is not recommended in cases of chronic diarrhoea, intestinal obstruction or hypersensitivity to any of the product’s ingredients.
Special considerations
Magnesium citrate is characterised by high bioavailability, as it is well absorbed in the gut.
The product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, as the capsules are plant-based and do not contain major allergens such as gluten or lactose. In the case of long-term treatment, it is recommended to monitor the total magnesium intake from both diet and supplements.
Side effects
The most common adverse reactions associated with magnesium citrate are gastrointestinal in nature and include diarrhoea, bloating, flatulence or abdominal cramps, particularly at high doses.
These effects are generally mild and reversible upon reducing the dose. Serious reactions are rare and generally occur in cases of overdose or renal failure.
Interactions with other medicines and foods
Magnesium citrate may interfere with the absorption of certain medicines, such as tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, bisphosphonates or levothyroxine, which is why it is recommended to take them at least 2–4 hours apart.
Foods rich in fibre or phytates may reduce magnesium absorption, whilst vitamin B6 may have a synergistic effect, facilitating the cellular utilisation of magnesium.
Overdose
An overdose of magnesium citrate can cause hypermagnesaemia, which presents with nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, muscle weakness and, in severe cases, heart rhythm disturbances.
If any suggestive symptoms appear, use should be discontinued and medical assessment is required.
Storage conditions
Magnesium citrate products should be stored in their original, tightly closed packaging in a dry place, protected from light and excessive heat. The optimal storage temperature is below 25 °C and the product must be kept out of the reach of children.

Magnesium Citrate + B6, 30 film-coated tablets, Beres Pharmaceuticals
A very good product—the whole family uses it every day

SFD Magnesium citrate + B6 (P-5-P), 180 tablets
I’ve been using it for a few weeks and am very pleased with the results. I chose this product because it contains magnesium citrate, a form that’s easily absorbed, and vitamin B6 is in its active form, P-5-P, which is an advantage over many other supplements. After about two weeks, I noticed a reduction in muscle cramps and a greater overall sense of relaxation, especially in the evening. The tablets are easy to take, and the 180-tablet supply offers excellent value for the duration of use. It did not cause me any stomach discomfort, which is important for people who are sensitive to magnesium supplements. The packaging is practical and allows for accurate dosing. I believe this is a suitable product for active people, for those dealing with fatigue, stress, or muscle cramps who are looking for an effective and well-balanced formula. I recommend this supplement for the quality of its ingredients and the effectiveness I’ve observed with daily use.

OstroVit Magnesium Citrate 400 mg + B6, 90 tablets
After using it... I need to change my approach—the product is still there... But on the other hand, the tablets aren't easy to swallow—they're very big and very hard... :-(( In short, the form definitely needs to be redesigned to be more flexible—for example, a powder capsule!?

It's always in my drawer; I tolerate this form very well, and I use it regularly to relieve stress and physical fatigue.

OstroVit Magnesium Citrate 400 mg + B6, 90 tablets
The value for money is very good... but it's still a bit too early to say how effective it is... However, the size and shape of the tablet are too hard...! and difficult to swallow... (You could put it in round, soft gel capsules, for example...)

OstroVit Magnesium Citrate 400 mg + B6, 90 tablets
Good magnesium citrate for muscle relaxation to take in the evening...to relax...recommended by my naturopath.

Xenico magnesium citrate, 165 g
This product is diluted in water and does not come in capsule form, but is easy to ingest nonetheless. Very clean composition with no unnecessary additives or enhancers, at a very good price. Highly recommended!

OstroVit supreme pure magnesium citrate, 200 g
I loved the description of this magnesium and purchased it with enthusiasm. I was thinking of taking a classic magnesium supreme with hot water. I do not doubt the validity of this magnesium, but in fact it does not dissolve easily and is not very pleasant to taste. Accustomed with the taste to magnesium supreme this unfortunately I do not tolerate it and, I found it difficult to make it dissolve. So I did not use it much to my regret. Now it sits there in the cupboard and I don't know how I can use it.
