Tahini is a paste made from roasted and finely ground sesame seeds. Tahini has a mild nutty flavour and is traditionally used in Middle Eastern, Caucasian, North African, Eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Asian cuisines. Tahini paste is a tasty way to add powerful antioxidants and healthy fats to your diet, as well as various vitamins and minerals.
What does tahini contain?
Tahini is high in healthy fats (over 50% are monounsaturated fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega-6, which have anti-inflammatory properties), vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6 and B9), fibre, protein, minerals (phosphorus, calcium, manganese, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper) and 0 cholesterol.
What are the properties of tahini?
- Tahini fights free radicals
Tahini contains phytosterols, tocopherols and lignans, bioactive components with antioxidant properties that help the body fight free radicals, reduce oxidative stress and the risk of diseases such as heart and liver disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer and Alzheimer's.
- Tahini can reduce triglyceride and cholesterol levels
- Tahini can be a good antibacterial
Thanks to the antioxidants and fats in their composition, sesame seeds may have antibacterial properties.
- Tahini can fight inflammation and pain
The anti-inflammatory and pain-blocking effects of sesame oil and sesamin have been demonstrated in animals with various injuries, lung diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma.
- Tahini can strengthen the central nervous system
Tahini contains compounds that reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and improve brain health. Sesame seeds protect brain and nerve cells from free radicals, reduce the negative effects of aluminium toxicity in the brain, and the antioxidants they contain can cross the blood-brain barrier, directly affecting the central nervous system and preventing the formation of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease.
- Tahini may be anti-carcinogenic
The antioxidants in sesame seeds can slow down the rate of tumour development and trigger the death of cancer cells in the colon, lungs, liver and breasts.
- Tahini helps protect the liver and kidneys
What are the contraindications for Tahini?
People with sesame seed allergies should not consume tahini.
How is tahini used?
Tahini can be used as a substitute for butter in baked goods or salad dressings.
Tahini can also be used in the preparation of falafel, hummus, pastries (pies) and halva.
Tahini goes well with meat, fish or vegetables, as well as with sweet ingredients in desserts.
