Acai (botanical name: Euterpe oleracea) is a small, dark red to black berry that grows at a height of approximately 25 meters on the fronds of the acai palm (also known as the cabbage palm, jucara palm, or assai palm). The fruit consists of about 80% single seeds. Acai palms, whose fronds can bear up to 6 kg of fruit, are found primarily in the lower Amazon region of the state of Pará. From July to December, the berries are harvested and processed into juice, powder, fruit puree, or the popular Vinho de Assai, a cacao-flavored wine. Acai berries are characterized by an exceptionally high content of anthocyanins, cell-protecting secondary plant compounds (polyphenols).
