Numerous bacteria accumulate in the oral cavity and multiply on the tooth surfaces. These bacteria, together with food debris, form sticky plaque, which minerals can then harden into tartar. From the tartar, plaque bacteria can penetrate the spaces between the teeth and secrete metabolic byproducts that destroy the connective tissue between the teeth and gums.
