What effect does the body's own L-carnitine have?

L-carnitine is a naturally occurring transport molecule whose function is to transport fatty acids into the mitochondria – the powerhouses of the cells. There, the fatty acids are burned to produce energy. L-carnitine facilitates the transport of fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane and, by removing metabolic waste products, protects the mitochondria from free radicals.

L-carnitine consists of the two amino acids methionine and lysine. A balanced, mixed diet provides approximately 100 to 300 mg of the substance daily. Under the right conditions, your body can also produce it itself. A vegetarian diet will only provide trace amounts of L-carnitine, as it is primarily found in meat.

For whom is L-carnitine particularly suitable?

L-carnitine is only obtained through meat and meat-containing foods, and to some extent through fish. Plant-based foods are practically devoid of L-carnitine.
