In recent years, the interest of the scientific community has focused on the 2 most important carotenoids: lutein and zeaxanthin.
Lutein is a yellow carotenoid that is not produced by the body and must therefore be obtained through diet or dietary supplements. Like all carotenoids, lutein is a powerful antioxidant, helping to neutralize free radicals. This biological role of lutein is particularly important, since lutein is found in high concentrations in the macula. In addition to its antioxidant activity, lutein also acts as a natural filter of ultraviolet radiation.
