Description
The evening primrose was originally found only in North America. There, it was revered by various Native American tribes as a valuable medicinal plant. It was discovered by the Algonquian Indians, who rubbed a crushed paste of evening primrose seeds onto their skin to treat rashes. Other tribes used the evening primrose for a variety of purposes.
A syrup made from the blossoms was used to treat asthma and whooping cough, as well as indigestion and gastrointestinal ailments. They also drank a decoction made from the leaves, which was believed to help with diarrhea.
With its discovery, the evening primrose seed also reached the "old world," initially only as an ornamental plant in botanical gardens. From there it escaped cultivation and eventually arrived in Germany.
