Coriander

The main components of coriander are 0.20-1% volatile oil consisting of 60-70% d-linalool or coriandrol, geraniol, cymol, pinene, terpinen, felandrene, dipentene, petroselinic acid, etc. 15-20% lipids, 10% starch, 4-5% minerals, pectins, vitamins (A, C, K), antioxidants, etc.

Coriander has carminative and stomachic properties, is used as a corrective for some medicines (volatile oil), has fungicidal and bactericidal properties, and is used to combat intestinal worms.

It is used in teas for children's colic, in gastric teas and in tonic aperitif teas. It is also used in aromatic water, which is then used to prepare iron malate tincture. It is also known as a good tonic for the nervous system.

Used in the food industry as a flavouring and spice, it is also known as ‘Chinese parsley’ and its dried leaves and seeds are consumed.

It plays a role in blood clotting and bone development, has an important role in the body's defence mechanism against free radicals, reduces inflammation, contributes to the health of the immune system, cures smallpox, is useful in the treatment of infections (including Salmonella), prevents menstrual disorders, helps eye care, and keeps diabetes under control.

According to ongoing studies, coriander may help lower blood cholesterol, support brain health (in diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis), aid digestion and thyroid health, and help with irritable bowel syndrome or increase appetite.

Coriander has antihistamine properties that combat seasonal allergies and rhinitis.

Coriander helps heal ulcers and spasms, while acting as an expectorant and protecting the liver. It is anticarcinogenic, anticonvulsant and hypnotic. It is considered a natural aphrodisiac and has been used in certain combinations with other herbs to enhance a person's libido.

Coriander has a strong taste, some even compare it to soap. Due to its possible effect on blood clotting, your doctor may recommend restricting or even avoiding coriander during treatment with anticoagulants.

There is also a risk of allergic reactions to coriander, and in very rare cases it can irritate the skin. Some patients complain of sensitivity to sunlight, which could lead to skin cancer in the long term.

Pregnant women are advised not to consume coriander, although some women have reported that it increases breast milk production.

Coriander oil can be used to reduce allergic reactions to contact with plants, foods, insects and other substances that can cause allergic reactions on the skin or when consumed. It can prevent anaphylaxis, hives and dangerous inflammation of the throat and glands.

Coriander essential oil is valued for its wonderful lively aroma and has many aromatherapeutic properties, such as helping with respiratory and digestive infections and rheumatic pain. It is tonic, combats physical and mental fatigue and stimulates memory.

Recommendations for use: can be used by diffusion in rooms or by inhalation, can be applied to the skin in the recommended dilution with vegetable oils or as an ingredient in cosmetic preparations and perfumery.

Coriander seeds combine very well with most other spices. Fresh leaves are usually added shortly before serving.
