The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Lycopene is a plant nutrient with antioxidant properties, from the carotenoid family. It is the pigment that gives red and pink fruits, such as tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit, their characteristic colour. Lycopene has been linked to health benefits ranging from heart health to protection against sunburn and certain types of cancer.
Antioxidants protect your body from damage caused by compounds known as free radicals. When free radical levels exceed antioxidant levels, they can create oxidative stress in your body. This stress is linked to certain chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer's.
Does lycopene have benefits?
It may protect against certain types of cancer
The powerful antioxidant action of lycopene may prevent or slow the progression of certain types of cancer. Test-tube studies show that the nutrient may slow the growth of breast and prostate cancers by limiting tumour growth. Animal studies show that it may prevent the growth of cancer cells in the kidneys.
In humans, observational studies link high intake of carotenoids, including lycopene, with a 32-50% lower risk of lung and prostate cancer.
May promote heart health
Lycopene may help reduce the risk of developing or dying prematurely from heart disease. This is partly because it can reduce risk factors for heart disease by reducing damage caused by free radicals, total cholesterol and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels, and may increase "good" HDL cholesterol.
It may protect against sunburn
Lycopene also appears to offer some protection against the harmful effects of the sun.
In another 12-week study, daily intake of 8–16 mg of lycopene, either from food or supplements, helped reduce the intensity of skin redness after UV exposure by 40–50%.
In this study, supplements providing a mixture of lycopene and other carotenoids were more effective against UV damage than those providing lycopene alone.
Where is lycopene found?
Lycopene is present in many foods, but you can also take it as a supplement. Keep in mind that when taken as a supplement, lycopene may interact with certain medications, including blood thinners and blood pressure medications. As a side note, some research shows that the beneficial effects of this nutrient may be stronger when consumed from food rather than supplements.
Here is a list of foods that contain the most lycopene per 100 grams:
- Sun-dried tomatoes: 45.9 mg
- Tomato puree: 21.8 mg
- Guava: 5.2 mg
- Watermelon: 4.5 mg
- Fresh tomatoes: 3.0 mg
- Canned tomatoes: 2.7 mg
- Papaya: 1.8 mg
- Pink grapefruit: 1.1 mg
- Cooked sweet red peppers: 0.5 mg
Does lycopene have any side effects?
Lycopene is generally considered safe, especially when obtained from food.
In a few rare cases, consuming very large amounts of lycopene-rich foods has led to a skin discolouration known as lycopene dermatitis, but such high levels are generally difficult to achieve through diet alone.
How is lycopene administered?
Currently, there is no recommended daily dose for lycopene. However, based on current studies, intakes between 8-21 mg per day appear to be most beneficial.
Method of administration 1-2 capsules per day, 20-30 minutes before a meal
It is recommended that you follow the instructions on the food supplement leaflet, or those given by your doctor or pharmacist.
What are the contraindications for Lycopene?
Pregnant and breastfeeding women may only use this product on the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
