Not all hair is the same. The differences are significant, yet all hairs share some common characteristics: Hair consists of flexible, approximately 0.1 mm thin keratin fibers of great strength and elasticity. Each hair is embedded in the skin by a hair follicle. It grows by forming new cells. These cells divide extremely rapidly, about five times faster than normal skin cells. Hairs remain on the head for approximately six years before falling out. During this time, they grow almost continuously until, relatively late in life, they enter a resting phase of a few months and then fall out. A new hair then grows in the same hair follicle and becomes visible after a few months. A hair grows about one centimeter per month. If you were to add up all the hairs, this would result in a total hair growth of 30 meters per day.
