Occult blood in the stool – what does it mean?

Fecal occult blood (FOB) may indicate developing digestive health problems. It may be one of the first, hidden symptoms of conditions such as colon cancer, polyps, diverticulosis, colitis, or anal fissures.

How does the FOB Fecal Occult Blood Home Test work?

The "Test Yourself" cassette test uses lateral flow immunochromatography. When the sample is applied to the test strip, it reacts with antibodies directed against human hemoglobin. If occult blood is present in the sample, a distinct line appears in the test field.

Additionally, a control line should appear in the designated area (C) each time. Its presence confirms that the sample was applied correctly and the test was performed according to the procedure – its presence is proof that the test is working properly.

The test detects blood at a concentration of at least 50 ng/ml or 6 μg/g of stool , providing results in just 5 minutes. Unlike older guaiac-based tests, its accuracy is not affected by patient diet, meaning it does not require a prior elimination diet and can be performed at any time.
