Silicolgel
Description Silicolgel
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Silicolgel is a medical device in the form of a colloidal gel based on hydrated silicic acid, a natural combination of silicon and oxygen in a dispersible form, used to protect and soothe the gastrointestinal mucosa. Silicon is the second most abundant element on Earth after oxygen and is found in nature in the form of silicon dioxide or silicic acid.
Forms of release
Silicolgel is available as a colloidal gel for internal use, packaged in 200 ml bottles or 15 ml sachets. Its viscous texture allows it to adhere effectively to the gastrointestinal mucosa, forming a uniform protective layer.
Indications for use
Silicolgel is indicated for the relief of symptoms caused by irritation of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, including:
- heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux,
- bloating, flatulence and abdominal discomfort,
- nausea and vomiting,
- acute or chronic diarrhoea,
- symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS),
- non-specific digestive disorders associated with stress or poor diet.
Through its adsorption and protective action, Silicolgel neutralises excessive acidity, reduces local inflammation, binds gases and inhibits the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to the intestinal mucosa.
Dosage regimen
For internal use, the following is recommended:
- Adults and children over 12 years: 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of Silicolgel three times a day, preferably one hour before meals or at least one hour apart from other medicines or supplements.
- The gel can be taken undiluted or diluted with water.
If symptoms do not improve within 3 days, consult your doctor. In case of severe diarrhoea, fluid replacement is necessary to prevent dehydration.
Contraindications
Silicolgel is a product with a high safety profile, but its use is contraindicated in the following situations:
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients (silicic acid, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate);
- Intestinal obstruction or severe impairment of gastrointestinal motility;
- Age under 12 years, unless recommended by a doctor.
Special instructions for use
Silicolgel is a medical device with local physical, not pharmacological, action. Thus, it does not produce systemic effects and can be integrated into complex gastrointestinal treatment regimens. It is gluten-free, lactose-free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
The product can be used safely in combination with other medicines, provided that the one-hour administration interval is observed.
Side effects
Silicolgel is very well tolerated, with adverse effects being rare and mild. In isolated cases, the following may occur:
- temporary constipation
- mild bloating at the beginning of treatment
- hypersensitivity reactions to preservatives (sorbic acid or sodium benzoate)
These manifestations are usually self-limiting and disappear when the dose is adjusted or the product is temporarily discontinued.
Interactions with other medicines and food
Due to its adsorbent properties, Silicolgel may reduce the intestinal absorption of certain concomitantly administered medicines. It is therefore essential that it be administered at least one hour apart from other treatments.
There are no strict dietary restrictions, but a balanced diet, rich in fibre and low in saturated fats, can enhance the therapeutic benefits of the product.
Overdose
To date, no cases of overdose with Silicolgel have been reported. As its action is physical and local, and silicon dioxide is not absorbed systemically, the risk of toxicity is minimal. However, excessive intake may cause constipation or abdominal discomfort. In such cases, it is recommended to discontinue use and ensure adequate hydration.
Storage conditions
Store at room temperature (15–25°C), away from frost and direct sunlight. Shake the bottle well before each use to homogenise the gel.
Use within 3 months of opening and do not use after the expiry date stated on the packaging. Keep out of the reach of children.
