Lactase
Description Lactase
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Lactase is an enzyme of animal origin that plays an essential role in the digestion of foods rich in lactose. Lactose is the sugar that gives whole milk its characteristic sweet taste.
Lactase has a specific activity, being able to break down only the lactose molecule. Thus, lactase deficiency causes lactose intolerance.
How does Lactase work?
Lactase is located in the intestinal mucosa. Its optimal activity occurs at pH 6 and a temperature of 37°C. In the body, lactase synthesis is encoded by the LCT gene.
Lactase has the ability to break down the lactose molecule (disaccharide) into galactose and glucose monomers (simple sugars). In this way, lactose and glucose monomers, which have a simpler molecule, can be more easily absorbed in the intestine.
What is the role of lactase?
The main role of lactase is to facilitate the digestion of dairy products. Lactose is found in the milk of all mammals, but also in milk-derived products: cream, cheese and, in smaller quantities, in fermented dairy products such as buttermilk, yoghurt, kefir, etc. Lactose is found in many processed foods, bread, sweets, instant soups, cakes, sausages, but also in the pharmaceutical industry, as an additional element used in the composition of various drug formulas.
Lactose intolerance has the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, regurgitation, pain, bloating, abdominal cramps, flatulence and diarrhoea.
What pharmaceutical preparations containing lactase are available on the market?
Lactase is included in dietary supplements along with other digestive enzymes in the form of tablets, capsules or drops.
The Lactase dietary supplement is prescribed for people with lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is the inability of the body to digest significant amounts of lactose and is caused by reduced production or decreased activity of lactase, resulting in the inability to break down lactose. In order to be absorbed by the intestine into the body, lactose must first be broken down into glucose and galactose. The enzyme that breaks down lactose into the two smaller carbohydrates is called lactase and is located on the surface of the cells lining the small intestine. The amount of lactase in the body decreases over time as we age, and most people can no longer completely digest lactose. It remains in the intestine, ferments and causes unpleasant symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, cramps or gas, i.e. lactose intolerance.
Laluk 4500 is a lactase-based supplement that helps the body digest lactose in the intestine. Taking Laluk 4500 helps people with lactose intolerance to continue consuming milk, dairy products, and foods containing lactose. The product contains natural lactase, which aids in the intestinal digestion of lactose, thereby preventing and alleviating the symptoms of lactose intolerance.
How is Lactase administered?
It is recommended to take 1 tablet before consuming the product or food containing lactose. If the intolerance is severe, 2 chewable tablets can be taken. The amount of lactase the body needs depends on the lactose content of the foods we eat, but also on the body's own lactase production. The effect lasts only for the meal for which it is taken. It can also be taken by children over 4 years of age, a quarter or half a tablet depending on the doctor's recommendation.
What are the contraindications for Lactase?
This product should not be administered to people who are hypersensitive to any of its components.
