The Kokum tree (Garcinia indica) is an evergreen tree found in the tropical forests of western India. It can even reach 15 m in height, and in April-May it produces small, red fruits of 2-3 cm. Both the pulp of the fruit and its seeds are used as spices for Indian dishes. From the kokum fruits, the locals prepare different syrups or refreshing, invigorating drinks.
Different parts of the tree (seeds, bark) are used in Ayurvedic preparations, because they offer a multitude of health benefits. Garcinol, the important active ingredient in kokum fruits, is a substance with antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Kokum butter is extracted from the seeds of this fruit, appreciated both for its balanced composition of stearic, palmitic and oleic acids, as well as for its sensory profile: non-greasy, easily penetrates the skin, does not leave an oily film on the skin.
It is a stable vegetable butter, resistant to oxidation, and thanks to the uniform composition of triglycerides, kokum butter is often used as a substitute for cocoa butter, in those applications where a less greasy texture is desired.
