Linden - three species of the Tilia genus are harvested for medicinal purposes: Tilia Tomentosa (Silver Linden), Tilia cordata (Pucious Linden) and Tilia platyphyllos (Large-leaved Linden). Lime flowers have been used for hundreds of years for their diaphoretic, antithermic, emollient, expectorant, sedative, anticongestive, antispasmodic effects, in digestive disorders, in hepato-biliary disorders, in migraines, etc.
The main active substances of the plant are volatile oils (0.04-0.07%), flavonoids (quercetin, isoquercetin, rutoside, tiliroside, gums, sugar, choline, acetylcholine), mucilages and tannins. Mucilages have different composition depending on the species. Thus, those from Pucios Lime contain polyuronic acid, hexose and methylpentosans, and those from Silver Lime contain galacturonic acid, arabinose, galactose and rhamnose.
Flavonoids have an antibiotic effect. At the same time, it acts on the nerve center in the brain that controls thermal regulation, activating sweat glands and the immune system. The linden flower extract is thus recommended in cases of cold with fever, also acting preventively.
The volatile oil has a neurosedative and antispasmodic effect, and the active principles contained in mucilages reduce inflammation of the respiratory tract, which recommends the extract from linden flowers as a nervous sedative in insomnia and as an expectorant in bronchitis.
Externally, in the form of a gargle, the diluted extract can be used in stomatitis and to soothe the pain caused by inflammation of the tonsils, in the form of compresses to combat wrinkles and dark circles, and in the form of frictions, to stimulate hair growth.
The volatile oil contains, among other things, an aliphatic sesquiterpenic alcohol: farnesol, which gives the characteristic smell of linden flowers. Among the species of the genus Tilia, the flowers of the species Tilia Tomentosa (Silver Lime) have the most fragrant smell, being at the same time more valuable from a pharmacological point of view and better tolerated by those who use them.
