How does melatonin work?

Melatonin is a natural neurohormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It is responsible for regulating the circadian rhythm, i.e. the sleep-wake cycle . Melatonin levels are low during the day and highest at night. Its secretion also varies seasonally, depending on the length of the day in different seasons.

Melatonin helps in the treatment of sleep disorders in two ways: it directly facilitates falling asleep and adjusts the sleep rhythm to changes in lighting and day length , through MT1 and MT2 receptors.
