Description
Braun Thermoscan 7 - precise and hygienic ear thermometer
The Braun ThermoScan 7 is Braun's flagship thermometer. This ear thermometer features the new, patented Age Precision technology for age-dependent adjustment of fever thresholds, enabling accurate, safe, and fast temperature measurements in the ear.
- Temperature measurement in the ear (at the eardrum)
- ExacTemp lighting
- patented Age Precision Technology (age setting)
- Preheated measuring tip
- Protective caps (pack of 20)
- storage box
➔ The shape of the thermometer measuring head prevents it from being inserted too far into the ear canal, which could damage the eardrum.
How does the Braun ThermoScan work?
The Braun ThermoScan measures the infrared heat emitted by the eardrum and surrounding tissue. To prevent inaccurate temperature readings, the measuring tip is preheated to a temperature similar to body temperature. When the Braun ThermoScan is inserted into the ear, it continuously measures the emitted infrared energy. The measurement ends and the result is displayed when the thermometer detects that an accurate temperature reading has been completed.
Other features:
- Memory mode: This model stores the last 9 temperature measurements. To view the stored readings, the thermometer must be switched on.
- Night light function: The thermometer includes a convenient night light to illuminate the display in a dark environment.
Why measure in the ear?
The aim of temperature measurement is to measure the core body temperature, which corresponds to the temperature of the vital organs. The temperature in the ear corresponds to the core body temperature because the eardrum and the hypothalamus, the temperature control center in the brain, have the same blood supply.
Changes in core body temperature therefore affect the ear more quickly than other parts of the body. Underarm skin temperature is measured, which may not be a reliable indicator of core body temperature. Oral temperature measurements are affected by drinking, eating, and breathing through the mouth. Rectal temperature measurements often lag behind changes in core body temperature, and there is a risk of cross-contamination.
Body temperature
Normal body temperature is a range. It varies depending on the measurement location and often decreases with age. It also differs from person to person and fluctuates throughout the day. Therefore, it's important to determine normal temperature ranges. This can be easily done with the Braun ThermoScan. Practice taking your own temperature and that of healthy family members to determine the normal temperature range.
| Age range | Green Normal temperature | Yellow Elevated temperature | Red High temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-3 months | ≥35.8 to ≤37.4 °C (≥96.4 to ≤99.4 °F) | NV | >37.4 °C (>99.4 °F) |
| 3-36 months | ≥35.4 to ≤37.6 °C (≥95.7 to ≤99.6 °F) | >37.6 to ≤38.5 °C (>99.6 to ≤101.3 °F) | >38.5 °C (>101.3 °F) |
| 36 months - Adult | ≥35.4 to ≤37.7 °C (≥95.7 to ≤99.9 °F) | >37.7 to ≤39.4 °C (>99.9 to ≤103.0 °F) | >39.4 °C (>103.0 °F) |
Age Precision color-coded display
Clinical studies have shown that the definition of fever depends on a child's age. A temperature that is normal for a four-year-old may indicate a fever in a newborn. Age is the determining factor. To help you interpret your child's temperature at a glance, we developed the new Braun ThermoScan 7 (IRT6520) with patented Age Precision technology. Simply press the Age Precision button to select the appropriate age setting, take the temperature, and the color-coded display will light up green, yellow, or red to clearly indicate the temperature measurement.
Elevated temperatures indicated by Age Precision can be a sign of serious illness, especially in older or frail adults with weakened immune systems, or in infants and young children. If you have an elevated temperature, please seek immediate professional advice if you belong to the following groups:
- Infants and toddlers under 3 months (contact your doctor immediately if the temperature is above 37.4°C or 99.4°F)
- Patients over 60 years of age
- Patients with diabetes mellitus or a weakened immune system (e.g., HIV positive, cancer chemotherapy, chronic steroid treatment, splenectomy)
- bedridden patients (e.g. nursing home patients, stroke, chronic illness, after surgery)
- transplanted patients (e.g. liver, heart, lung, kidney)
Note: When speaking with your doctor, you should inform them that the temperature you measured with the ThermoScan is an ear measurement and, if possible, also provide them with the relevant normal ThermoScan temperature range as an additional reference.
