Krill oil is obtained from small marine crustaceans called krill. It contains a mixture of omega-3 fatty acids with a high proportion of EPA and DHA in the form of phospholipids. This results in their higher biological value and better absorbability . Eicosapentaenoic acid EPA and docosahexaenoic acid DHA contribute to the proper functioning of the heart, and DHA also supports brain activity and good vision.

Krill oil also contains the aqueous carotenoid astaxanthin . It is a red pigment found, for example, in salmon or krill and is structurally similar to beta-carotene (provitamin A). Its effects on eye and skin health or the reduction of oxidative stress are currently the subject of research.
