5-HTP

5-HTP is an amino acid that can be converted into serotonin in the body. It thus helps restore optimal serotonin levels in the body. It is sometimes recommended for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. It helps the nervous system function properly, induces calmness, self-confidence, relaxation, and helps induce sleep by increasing melatonin levels. It can also reduce excessive food consumption caused by a number of emotional disorders. It is also recommended for migraines, headaches, premenstrual syndrome and fibromyalgia. It may also be recommended for reducing certain addictions.

Taking 5-HTP can restore emotional and mental balance, support the proper functioning of the nervous system, and reduce depression and anxiety. It combats stress and helps maintain mental health, reduces irritability and behavioural changes, and induces a state of calm and relaxation. It improves sleep, can help reduce certain forms of addiction and can reduce migraines, headaches and some effects of premenstrual syndrome. 5-HTP supplements can help reduce excessive food consumption caused by certain emotional disorders. Problems such as anxiety, depression and irritability can lead to unhealthy eating habits and vice versa. 5-HTP supplements contain 5-HTP from natural sources – Griffonia simplicifolia, usually 50 mg/capsule or 100 mg/capsule. Some formulas are enriched with vitamin C and vitamin B6, which support the metabolism of 5-HTP into serotonin. These contribute to the proper functioning of the nervous system and reduce fatigue and exhaustion. The supplements come in the form of gastro-resistant film-coated tablets. 5-HTP supplements are usually taken 1-2 tablets 1-3 times a day – depending on the concentration, type of product and manufacturer's recommendations – with meals or as directed by a doctor.

5-HTP supplements are not recommended for children under 12 years of age, pregnant women or women who wish to become pregnant, or breastfeeding women. The product is also contraindicated in cases of allergy to any of the ingredients, as well as for those with ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, gluten intolerance, epilepsy, scleroderma, Parkinson's disease, or in cases of allopathic treatment for the above diseases or when taking antidepressants.

5-HTP supplements are generally safe. However, in some cases, they can lead to a number of reactions or side effects, such as headache, abdominal pain, rhinorrhoea, drowsiness, and diarrhoea. If such side effects occur, discontinue use.
