What are omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids found mainly in fatty fish such as herring, salmon and mackerel. The most important omega-3 fatty acids are: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
In 1970, two Danish doctors, Bang and Dyerberg, showed that Greenland Eskimos generally have better health than the Danish population because they consume a greater amount of fish and marine mammals*.
If you do not eat fish, it may be beneficial to take an omega-3 fatty acid supplement to ensure you are getting enough of this nutrient. It is preferable that, through food, we receive an optimal proportion of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (a group of fatty acids found in plants). Experts believe that the ideal ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 is 1:4.

Good for the heart, brain and eyesight
EPA and DHA fatty acids have a number of positive effects on the body. For example, 200 mg of DHA per day contributes to the normal development of the brain and eyes of the fetus and breastfed children. In adults, 250 mg of DHA per day contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and normal brain function. Moreover, 250 mg of DHA and EPA per day contribute to the normal functioning of the heart.
The mentioned levels correspond to 2 capsules (220 mg DHA)/day of Bio-Marin Plus.
Free fatty acids in Bio-Marin Plus
In nature, omega-3 fatty acids are found in the form of triglycerides, which must be broken down into free fatty acids before being absorbed in the digestive tract. This process is carried out by a digestive enzyme called lipase. Bio-Marin Plus contains omega-3 in the form of free fatty acids that have already been broken down and are ready for absorption. The advantage of using this type of omega-3 fatty acids is that these fatty acids are absorbed directly even in people with lipid malabsorption.
Bio-Marin Plus is a beneficial supplement for those who, for various reasons, do not consume enough fish and for those who need high quality fish oil.
Where does the word "Plus" come from?
In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, Bio-Marin Plus contains folic acid and vitamin B12. Both vitamins, through their contribution to the normal metabolism of homocysteine, support the action of omega-3 fatty acids. Folic acid also contributes to a normal immune system, maintaining mental health and blood formation. Furthermore, folic acid plays a role in the process of cell division and supports the normal growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy.
PureMaxTM ensures optimal purity
The fish oil in Bio-Marin Plus is PureMax™ certified which means that the oil is certified as having a very high level of purity. PureMax™ is one of the leading technologies used worldwide to identify and remove unwanted particles such as pesticides, heavy metals, furans (highly toxic particles from industrial combustion), etc. The PureMax™ certification means that in Bio-Marin Plus the level of some of these harmful compounds is well below the officially approved level for fish and fish oil products.
