Calpis – what is it?

In the early 20th century, a young Japanese entrepreneur, Kaiun Mishima, traveled to mainland China in search of new trade opportunities. The journey turned out to be much longer and more demanding than he expected. Exhausted and weak, he regained his strength thanks to the local people in Inner Mongolia, who gave him a milk drink with a sharp, sour taste, which they called "culture milk".

After returning to Japan in 1915, Mishima, inspired by the properties of this drink, began research on its equivalent. After several years of work on fermentation using the Lactobacillus strain of lactic acid bacteria, in 1919 he introduced Calpis ^® - the first Japanese fermented milk drink. Its name comes from the words "Calcium" () and the Sanskrit "sarpiṣ" (sharp). To this day, Calpis ^® remains an important element of the Japanese diet, produced according to the original recipe, adapted to modern needs.
