Sulfaguaiacol has an expectorant effect, facilitating the movement of liquefied secretions through the respiratory tract and their expectoration.

Codeine is converted into morphine in the liver by an enzyme. Morphine is the substance that determines codeine's effects. Some people have a variation of this enzyme, which can cause different effects in different individuals. In some people, morphine is not produced or is produced in very small amounts, and therefore will not have a cough suppressant effect. Others are more likely to experience severe side effects due to the very large amounts of morphine produced. If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately: slow or shallow breathing, confusion, drowsiness, constricted pupils, nausea or vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite.
Overuse of Thiocodin can lead to addiction. Withdrawal symptoms may occur if this medication is overused and abruptly discontinued.
