Description Glycerine

The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual

Glycerine is a light, colourless and tasteless substance with hygroscopic properties, used in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food industries. It is obtained by the hydrolysis of hydroglycerides or by the reduction of aldehydes. It is a powerful humectant and can be used in personal hygiene products such as toothpaste or soap, as well as an excipient in medicines such as glycerine suppositories or glycerine borax.

What are the benefits of glycerine?

Glycerine is recognised for its use in skin care products. It is easy to find a cream or soap containing glycerine among the products on the Liki24 website.

In medicine, glycerine is used in medicines such as suppositories for constipation. These have a laxative effect by stimulating water secretion in the intestine and lubricating the faeces. The use of glycerine suppositories is only a support to a hygienic and dietary treatment. For good bowel function, a diet rich in fibre and fluids is necessary. In addition, physical activity (even walking) is also necessary.

How can glycerine be used?

In the pharmaceutical industry, glycerine is used in the following products:

Glycerine is recognised for its use in skin care products. When applied topically, glycerine, through its moisturising properties, can be an adjuvant in improving the hydration level of the outer layer of the skin.

Glycerine suppositories are medicines that help treat constipation by facilitating bowel movements after surgery or before a rectoscopy. Glycerine suppositories activate secretion in the rectal mucosa, triggering the defecation process.

Borax glycerine or glycerine with nystatin is recommended as an antiseptic for oral cavities and as an adjunctive treatment for inflammation of various aetiologies of the oral mucosa such as aphthae, glossitis, stomatitis, gingivitis and Candida albicans infections.

Does glycerine have any contraindications?

Do not use glycerine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to glycerine or any of the other ingredients of the medicine or product containing glycerine.

Can glycerine be used during pregnancy?

Before using glycerine suppositories during pregnancy and breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.

There are no controlled studies on the effects of this medicine in pregnant women, but glycerine suppositories can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only when absolutely necessary and only on the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.

Does glycerine have any side effects?

Like all medicines, glycerine suppositories for adults can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. These are very rare and are mainly local reactions caused by prolonged use of the suppositories: anal burning sensation and, in exceptional cases, congestive inflammation of the rectum.

How is glycerine administered?

Glycerine suppositories are administered intrarectally, one suppository at a time as needed.

If you use more glycerine suppositories for adults than recommended, no overdose with glycerine suppositories has been reported. However, local irritation may occur. If you experience such effects, stop use and consult your doctor.

Borax glycerine is applied by local swabbing in the oral cavity. Do not consume liquids or food for at least half an hour after use to ensure maximum effect.
