Wormwood

Bitter wormwood has a bitter taste and a strong aroma, often associated with the traditional drink called absinthe. It contains substances that can be toxic in large doses. Therefore, it should be used with caution. Sweet wormwood has a less bitter taste and does not have the intense aroma characteristic of bitter wormwood. It is also called sweet wormwood and is used mainly in traditional medicine to treat several conditions. Supplements are based on sweet wormwood and are available in several forms:

• wormwood capsules – such as Wormwood from Pro Natura or Wormwood from Favisan;
• wormwood tincture;
• wormwood syrup;
• wormwood tea.

Wormwood-based products are usually recommended for their diuretic and laxative effects – they also promote the elimination of intestinal parasites. Wormwood or sweet wormwood also supports gastric and biliary secretion, increasing appetite. It can also support brain function. Sweet wormwood tea can be used and is indicated for external use as an anti-candidal, anti-inflammatory and vermifuge in the form of enemas. Externally, it is mainly used in the form of wormwood tea washes. Wormwood tincture protects the body from infections, reduces indigestion, supports immunity, helps reduce intestinal parasites and can even help in the process of quitting smoking.

Dosage and administration vary depending on the type of product. For capsules, 1-2 capsules 3 times a day, half an hour before meals, is usually recommended. Wormwood tea is prepared by infusion, with a daily dose of 1-3 cups per day. The tincture is administered in a dose of 15 drops 2-3 times a day, half an hour before meals.

How to take wormwood: Wormwood capsules are taken with water, usually 30 minutes before meals. The tea is prepared by infusing 1 teaspoon of the plant in 250 ml of water – leave to infuse for about 10-15 minutes. The tincture should be diluted in water or tea or consumed as it is. The bottle should be shaken before use.

How long to take wormwood: The duration of treatment varies depending on the indications for which it is used and the type of product. Wormwood supplements are usually taken for 1 month, several times a year or in 3-week courses, with a 2-week break between courses. Wormwood tea is usually consumed for 5 days, with a 2-day break, or for 2 weeks with a 1-month break. The tincture is usually taken for 2 weeks with a 2-week break. It is best to take it as recommended by your doctor.

There are also a number of contraindications for wormwood tea or other wormwood products. Wormwood has both benefits and contraindications. Wormwood products are contraindicated in cases of allergy or hypersensitivity to this plant. They are also not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. They are also not recommended in cases of hyperacid gastritis, duodenal or gastric ulcers, or epilepsy.

There are no known severe interactions between wormwood and certain medicines or foods. However, it is best to take such products only as directed by your doctor, informing them of any other treatments you are taking.

Wormwood is generally safe, but it can sometimes cause adverse effects, just like any other supplement. For example, it can cause stomach discomfort, such as nausea or vomiting, liver problems, or other effects. Inform your doctor of any adverse effects that occur.

Excessive doses, more than those indicated by your doctor, can lead to severe symptoms such as gastrointestinal disorders, agitation, dizziness, insomnia, tremors or even convulsions. It is recommended to take wormwood under medical supervision and to follow the recommended doses.

Store wormwood-based products in a place away from moisture and heat, in their original packaging. Keep out of the reach of children.
