Dry eye, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a widespread condition in Germany, affecting 15-17% of the population. Dry eye is a disorder of the tear film and ocular surface caused by many factors. Tear fluid is essential for eye health, as it lubricates the ocular surface, keeps it smooth and supple, flushes out foreign bodies, and defends against bacterial infections. It also supplies the cornea and conjunctiva with oxygen and nutrients. If the quality or quantity of tear fluid is impaired, subjectively bothersome symptoms arise. These include tired, burning, itchy, and gritty eyes, increased tear production, light sensitivity, redness of the conjunctiva, and a feeling of dryness.
Dry eye is usually a chronic condition that should be treated early to prevent further damage. Medical lubricating solutions containing hyaluronic acid – such as VISMED – have proven effective for over 20 years. The product is preservative-free and therefore very well tolerated. VISMED can also be used for daily lubrication in cases of chronic dry eye with damaged tear glands. VISMED is a registered medical device. As such, if a doctor determines that it is therapeutically necessary, the costs of VISMED can be reimbursed by statutory health insurance. The product is therefore eligible for prescription, but does not require a prescription.
VISMED can be prescribed for various autoimmune diseases (Sjögren's syndrome with significant functional impairment, epidermolysis bullosa or ocular pemphigoid), missing or damaged lacrimal gland, facial nerve paralysis (facial palsy) or incomplete eyelid closure (lagophthalmos).

Instructions for use:
Twist off the ampoule cap, tilt your head back slightly, and hold the dropper tip over the eye to be treated. Using the index finger of one hand, pull down the lower eyelid. Gently squeeze the dropper to release one drop of VISMED solution. Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye or your fingers. Blinking will distribute the solution evenly, forming a clear and durable layer of liquid on the surface of the eye. Do not use damaged ampoules.

The storage temperature should be below 30 °C.

Warnings: Reseal the ampoule after use. As VISMED contains no preservatives, the solution should be used within 12 hours of opening. Any solution not used within 12 hours of opening must be discarded. Otherwise, sterility is no longer guaranteed and this may lead to a risk of infection. Do not freeze! Do not use VISMED after the expiry date printed on the ampoule and the carton. If your symptoms persist while using VISMED, you should seek medical attention. Keep out of reach of children.
