Methylene blue

Pharmacies offer multiple preparations containing methylene blue in the form of lozenges, sprays, tablets, and injectable solutions. Some such preparations include:

• preparations for the treatment of respiratory infections: such as Biseptol with methylene blue, Septosol with methylene blue, Decasept with methylene blue;
• preparations for the treatment of urinary tract infections: Uractiv forte with methylene blue, Urinal Akut with methylene blue, Uractiv with methylene blue, Urinal with methylene blue, Biseptol urinal with methylene blue;
• gargle preparations - mouthwash with methylene blue.

However, methylene blue is usually available in liquid form, as a solution - generally in 25 g bottles. Here are a few examples:

• Methylene blue 1%, 25 ml, Adya Green
• Methylene blue, 100 ml, Promedivet

Methylene blue for internal use is found in various preparations alone or in combination with other antiseptic substances that act synergistically to treat various conditions, such as:

• urinary tract infections - methylene blue prevents bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract and, through its antiseptic and antibacterial effects, helps to relieve the associated symptoms;
• respiratory infections (flu, colds, pharyngitis, bronchitis) but also sore throats that are not associated with infections, such as those caused by drinking cold beverages, people who overuse their vocal cords, and people who breathe through their mouths;
• mouth ulcers or herpes lesions;
• methylene blue for external use - dermatological lesions such as lichen planus;
• neuroprotective role.

Methylene blue is a potent antiseptic preparation, frequently used in combination with other preparations to treat certain conditions. For example, in the case of urinary or respiratory infections, it may be necessary to combine methylene blue with an antibiotic, according to the antibiogram.

Dosage and administration vary depending on the type of product. Read the package leaflet to see the exact method of use. In the case of the solution, methylene blue is applied externally only, by dabbing or brushing, as needed.

There are also some contraindications for methylene blue. Methylene blue is contraindicated if you are allergic or hypersensitive to methylene blue. Do not use in young children unless directed by a doctor.

This product is generally safe, but for safety reasons, inform your doctor about any treatments you are following.

Methylene blue is a safe ingredient, but like any other preparation, it can sometimes cause reactions. Consult your doctor if you experience any type of reaction during use. Methylene blue may colour your urine blue or dark green.
