Butyric acid (or butanoic acid) belongs to the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which are the basic elements of fats, necessary for the proper functioning of cells. It is the most important source of energy for colonocytes (epithelial cells of the large intestine).

Products rich in fiber (including inulin) and some probiotics can increase its concentration in the body. However, it sometimes happens that its production in the colon is too low, which can lead to digestive disorders. In humans, its concentration also decreases with age. In such cases, butyric acid can also be administered orally. However, it is important that it goes directly to the intestines and is not digested in the stomach.
