Cationorm

Cationorm is available as an emulsion eye drops, supplied in a 10 ml bottle, a pack that allows for easy and hygienic administration. 

The sterile formula is designed for multi-dose use and is preservative-free, which is a significant advantage in the medium- and long-term treatment of dry eye.

Cationorm is recommended for the relief of symptoms of dry eye syndrome, which manifest as:

• a burning or itching sensation;
• eye itching;
• a foreign body sensation;
• tingling;
• eye discomfort or irritation;
• floating vision associated with tear film instability.

These symptoms may be caused by external factors such as exposure to air conditioning, pollution, wind, prolonged use of digital devices, frequent air travel or the use of contact lenses. 

Cationorm is also useful in Meibomian gland dysfunction, a condition characterised by an alteration of the lipid layer of the tear film and increased tear evaporation.

By restoring the lipid layer and reducing evaporation, the product helps to stabilise the tear film and reduce the inflammation associated with chronic dry eye.

The recommended dose is 1 drop in each eye, 1 to 4 times a day, depending on the severity of symptoms and the specialist’s recommendations.

Administration involves instilling one drop into the lower conjunctival sac, taking care to avoid contact between the bottle tip and the ocular surface or other surfaces to prevent contamination.

Cationorm is contraindicated in cases of known hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formulation, including mineral oils, glycerol, tiloxapol, poloxamer 188, tris hydrochloride, tromethamine or cetylpyridinium chloride (cationic agent).

There are no significant restrictions on use in the general population; however, as with any ophthalmic product, use should be discontinued in the event of intolerance reactions.

The Cationorm formula combines mineral oils and a physiologically balanced aqueous phase, utilising positive electrostatic attraction to adhere effectively to the ocular surface. 

Compatibility with contact lenses allows administration without the need to remove them, which is particularly relevant for active patients.

When used regularly, Cationorm acts in a similar way to natural tears, providing long-term protection and hydration.

In general, Cationorm is well tolerated. Transient reactions may rarely occur, such as:

• slightly blurred vision immediately after instillation;
• a temporary sensation of discomfort;
• mild irritation.

These symptoms are usually self-limiting and do not require discontinuation of treatment. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist.

No systemic interactions are known, given the minimal local absorption of the product.

If other eye drops are being used, it is recommended that Cationorm be administered at an appropriate interval, preferably after the last application, to avoid dilution or removal of other topical medicines.

Due to topical administration and the favourable safety profile, the risk of overdose is low. Accidental instillation of a larger quantity may cause temporary discomfort or transient blurred vision, without significant systemic consequences.

In the event of accidental ingestion, symptomatic monitoring is recommended, but systemic toxicity is unlikely.

Cationorm must be stored in the original packaging, at temperatures below 25 °C, protected from direct light and excessive moisture.

Once the bottle has been opened, the product may be used for 3 months, provided that appropriate hygiene and handling conditions are observed. The bottle must be kept tightly closed between uses.
