What are the benefits of activated charcoal?
Medicinal charcoal is an important adjuvant in intestinal flatulence, dyspeptic syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption syndrome, chronic diarrhoea, liver cirrhosis, intestinal parasitosis or ulcerative colitis. It has antiseptic and antitoxic effects, absorbs gases from fermentation and intestinal putrefaction. How is medicinal charcoal administered?
The administration of medicinal charcoal depends on its concentration and is taken before and after meals, or as needed.
To obtain a beneficial effect, it is recommended to take 1 g 30 minutes before meals and 1 g immediately after meals.
What are the contraindications for medicinal charcoal?
Do not take medicinal charcoal if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, are on anticoagulant therapy, have intestinal obstruction, have recently undergone surgery, have intestinal bleeding or chronic constipation.
Do not take medicinal charcoal for long periods of time.
If you are taking other medications, consult your doctor before taking activated charcoal, as it may reduce the absorption of some medications. Activated charcoal may reduce the effect of antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin.
What are the side effects of medicinal charcoal?
The most common side effects are constipation, dehydration, dizziness or vomiting.
