- Bitter orange is native to Asia, but can also be found in Mediterranean areas. Synephrine is most often extracted from the peel of the fruit, and its leaves are often used to make essential oils. Synephrine appears in many products, but is usually contained in thermogenic formulas. It is also popular as a synergist for caffeine. Synephrine is often compared to ephedrine. When ephedrine was banned, the search for a substitute began. And this was found in synephrine, a compound that is chemically very similar to pseudoephedrine and ephedrine;
