Teeth should be cleaned with dental floss to remove food particles and plaque that accumulate between teeth and under the gumline, where a toothbrush can't reach. Flossing once a day removes plaque before it hardens into tartar. Choose a floss that expands as it slides between your teeth. Cut about 18 inches (45 centimeters) of floss and wrap the ends around the middle finger of each hand. Pinch the floss between your thumbs and index fingers, leaving about an inch (2 or 3 centimeters) of floss between them. Keep the floss taut and guide it between your teeth using a zigzag motion. Carefully insert the floss between your teeth. Slide the floss up and down the surface of the tooth and also under the gumline. Clean each tooth thoroughly with a clean section of floss.
