Methylene blue (C₁₆H₁₈ClN₃S) is an organic chemical compound belonging to the group of phenothiazine dyes. It is widely used in chemistry, biology and medicine.

Summary formula: C₁₆H₁₈ClN₃S- Molar mass: 319.85 g/mol- The structure contains a phenothiazine system with amine substituents and a chloride ion.

Features:

• Solubility: well soluble in water and alcohols, creates an intensely blue solution. PH dependence: its color changes depending on the environment - in acidic solutions it takes the cationic form (more intensely blue), and in alkaline solutions it can be reduced to a colorless leukoderivative.
• Reduction and oxidation: -It can be reduced to methylene blue, which is colorless, but in contact with oxygen it re-oxidizes to methylene blue. -It acts as an electron acceptor and donor, so it is used as a redox indicator.
• Reactivity: -In a reducing environment it can turn into methylene blue, which is used in chemical reactions and biological research. -It can react with various biological substances, e.g. proteins and nucleic acids, which makes it useful in microscopy and molecular biology. -It is relatively stable, but in the presence of strong oxidants or reducing agents it may degrade.
• Applications: - Redox indicator - used, for example, in chemical analyzes and biological tests. - Biological dye - used in microscopy to color preparations. - Use in aquariums - used to color water. - Fluorescence, shows fluorescent properties under certain conditions.
