Basic principles of healthy digestion: what helps keep your stomach healthy
Description Amino
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Amino acids are organic compounds formed from amino and carboxyl groups. They are essential nutrients for the body, forming part of the proteins in our body, which are found in many structures, from muscle fibres to enzymes.
What are amino acids?
Amino acids are chemical structures, with 20 amino acids classified into two groups: a group of essential amino acids comprising nine amino acids and non-essential amino acids. Essential amino acids cannot be produced by the body, which is why it is important to obtain them from food. The nine essential amino acids are: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, threonine, and valine.
What are BCAA amino acids?
BCAA are branched-chain amino acids that are essential nutrients such as leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Their primary source comes from food, meat, dairy products, and vegetables. BCAA amino acids stimulate protein production in the muscles and may reduce muscle tears during training.
The name BCAA (branched-chain amino acids) comes from their chemical structure.
What are BCAA amino acids used for?
BCAA amino acids are commonly used to improve athletic performance, prevent fatigue and reduce muscle tears. However, there is insufficient evidence to prove that BCAA supplementation provides all these benefits.
What is the difference between amino acids and BCAA?
BCAAs are basically a type of amino acid. There are two types of BCAAs: proteinogenic (leucine, isoleucine and valine) and non-proteinogenic (2-aminoisobutyric acid).
Do BCAAs have side effects?
There is some controversy surrounding oral BCAA supplementation. Some authors consider that consumption of up to 12 grams per day for up to 2 years may be safe. However, even these authors report side effects of BCAAs such as fatigue, coordination problems, dyspeptic syndrome, nausea, diarrhoea and flatulence (bloating).
Can I take BCAAs during pregnancy?
There is insufficient data to show whether oral BCAA supplementation is safe for pregnant women or during breastfeeding. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid BCAA supplementation during this period and focus on a balanced diet that will naturally provide these nutrients.
Are there any drug interactions with BCAA?
BCAA supplementation interferes with the intestinal and cerebral absorption of levodopa (a drug used in Parkinson's disease), thereby reducing the effectiveness of the drug.
BCAA may interact with diabetes medication, especially if you are on a treatment with an increased risk of hypoglycaemia (insulin or sulphonylureas).
Ask your diabetes doctor if you can use BCAA amino acids alongside your treatment and monitor your blood sugar closely.
I exercise. Should I take amino acids or BCAA?
Supplementing with amino acids or BCAA is not necessary if you have a balanced diet that includes good sources of protein (meat, dairy, eggs, fish).
When should I take BCAAs?
As a general rule, you can take amino acids during your workout, but also before or after. Read the package insert first to make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions.
