Vitex (Agnus Castus)

One of the main attributes of Vitex is to reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, such as irritability, pain, constipation, migraines, hot flushes, breast tenderness, mood swings and abdominal cramps. This effect occurs by lowering prolactin hormone levels, helping to rebalance other hormones, including oestrogen and progesterone, according to researchers.

According to studies conducted on women with premenstrual syndrome who were given vitex during three consecutive menstrual cycles, 93% of patients reported a decrease in the number of symptoms or even the cessation of PMS symptoms. While 85% of doctors rated it as good or very good, 81% of patients rated their condition after treatment as good or much better.

Another attribute of Vitex is that it can reduce menopausal symptoms. The hormone-balancing effects of Vitex can help alleviate menopausal symptoms by balancing the estrogen/progesterone ratio. Multiple studies have shown that most women reported improvements in symptoms. It should be noted that women were given supplements that mixed Vitex agnus-castus with other medicinal herbs.

Vitex may improve female fertility due to its possible effect on progesterone and prolactin levels. This disorder is linked to abnormally high prolactin levels and low progesterone levels. This disorder can also occur in women with luteal phase defect or a shorter second half of the menstrual cycle. Multiple studies have shown that Vitex reduced prolactin levels and stimulated progesterone secretion, improving overall menstrual cycles.

Vitex is administered as 1 capsule twice daily with meals and 200 ml of water, or as recommended by a healthcare professional. According to researchers, 30–40 mg of dried fruit extract, 3–6 grams of dried plant, or 1 gram of dried fruit per day appears to be safe for administration.

Vitex is considered safe for use, but some minor side effects have been reported, including nausea, indigestion, mild skin rash, headache, and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Vitex contraindications:

• Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid Vitex, as its effects on babies have not been well studied.
• Vitex may interact with: antipsychotic drugs, contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy.
