Guarana
Description Guarana
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Guarana is a plant native to the Amazon basin and found mainly in Brazil. It is also known as Paullinia cupana, a climbing plant prized for its fruit. Guarana has large leaves and clusters of flowers and is best known for the seeds in its fruit, which are about the size of a coffee bean. Guarana extract is obtained by processing the seeds into a powder.
As a dietary supplement or herb, guarana seeds are an effective stimulant: they contain approximately twice the concentration of caffeine found in coffee beans (approximately 2-8% caffeine in guarana seeds, compared to approximately 1-3% for coffee beans).
It also contains an impressive range of stimulants, such as caffeine, theophylline and theobromine. Guarana also contains antioxidants such as tannins, saponins and catechins. Today, a large proportion, approximately 70% of guarana produced, is used by the beverage industry in soft drinks and energy drinks, while the remaining 30% is processed into guarana powder.
What are the benefits of guarana?
- Rich in antioxidants - Guarana contains theobromine, caffeine, tannins, catechins, saponins and other compounds with antioxidant properties similar to those found in green tea. Antioxidants are important because they neutralise free radicals in the body, which are potentially harmful molecules. These molecules can interact with parts of your cells and cause damage related to ageing, heart disease, cancer and other diseases.
- May reduce fatigue and improve concentration - It is an excellent source of caffeine, which helps you maintain your concentration and mental energy. Caffeine works by blocking the effects of adenosine. Adenosine is a compound that helps the brain relax. Caffeine binds to adenosine receptors, preventing them from activating and thus keeping the brain focused.
- May promote weight loss – Being a rich source of caffeine, it can boost your metabolism by 3-11% in 12 hours. A faster metabolism means that your body burns more calories at rest.
- May boost heart health – Guarana may reduce the risk of heart disease in two ways. Firstly, the antioxidants in guarana appear to help blood flow and may prevent blood clots from forming. Second, studies have shown that guarana can lower the oxidation of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol. Oxidised LDL cholesterol can contribute to plaque formation in the arteries. In fact, adults who consume guarana may have up to 27% less oxidised LDL than adults of similar age who do not eat this fruit.
- May relieve pain - Caffeine plays a role in pain management because it binds to and blocks adenosine receptors. When caffeine binds to these receptors, it can reduce pain sensations. This is one of the reasons why caffeine is commonly found in many over-the-counter pain relief medications. Studies have shown that it can significantly improve their effects.
What are the side effects of guarana?
Research shows that guarana has low toxicity in small to moderate doses.
In high doses, guarana can cause side effects similar to those of excessive caffeine intake, such as:
- Sleep disturbances
- Nervousness
- Agitation
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased heart rate
- Irritation of the gastric mucosa
- May worsen diarrhoea and irritable bowel symptoms
It is worth noting that caffeine can be addictive and may lead to dependence in high doses.
How is guarana administered?
Although guarana does not have a recommended dose, most human studies have found that doses of up to 50-75 mg may provide the health benefits associated with guarana.
In what forms can guarana be found?
It is available in dietary supplements, capsules, powder and combinations (Guarana Mate).
What are the contraindications for Guarana?
Due to its high caffeine content, Guarana is not recommended for pregnant women (caffeine can cross the placenta), breastfeeding women and children. Too much caffeine can cause growth abnormalities in your child or increase the risk of miscarriage. It is recommended that people suffering from cardiovascular disorders, insomnia, high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism seek the advice of a specialist doctor before taking Guarana-based supplements.
